(1) The origin of all of you is one and the same. Your whole species has sprung up from one man and one woman. All your races that are found in the world today are, in fact, the branches of one initial race that started with one mother and one father. In this process of creation there is no basis whatsoever for the divisions and distinctions in which you have involved yourselves because of your false notions. One God alone is your Creator.
(2) In spite of being one in origin, it was natural that you should be divided into nations and tribes. Obviously, all the men on the earth could not belong to one and the same family. With the spread of the race it was inevitable that countless families should arise, and then tribes and nations should emerge from the families. Similarly, it was inevitable that after settling in different regions of the earth, there should be differences of colors, features, languages and ways of living among the people, and it was also natural that those living in the same region should be closer in affinity and those living in remote regions not so close.  (3) The only basis of superiority and excellence that there is, or can be, between man and man is that of moral excellence. As regards birth, all men are equal, for their Creator is One, their substance of creation is one, and their way of creation is one, and they are descended from the same parents. Moreover, a person’s being born in a particular country, nation, or clan is just accidental. Therefore, there is no rational ground on account of which one person may be regarded as superior to the other. The real thing that makes one person superior to others is that one should be more God-conscious, a greater avoider of evils, and a follower of the way of piety and righteousness. Such a man, whether he belongs to any race, any nation and any country, is valuable and worthy on account of his personal merit. And the one who is reverse of him in character is in any case an inferior person whether he is black or white, born in the east or the west.

(1) This hadith teaches us the causes which can lead to our destruction

(2) From the wording of the hadith, we can see that it is more stressed to stay away from prohibition than fulfil commandment. This is because the prophet (peace be upon him) told us to stay away from prohibitions, but when it came to commandments, he said “do as much of it as you can”

(3) A prohibition includes haram and disliked actions as both have been prohibited, but the prohibition for haram actions was stricter. Therefore, we shouldn’t look at disliked actions in a light way and remember that they have been prohibited by Allah and His messenger (peace be upon him)

(4) A commandment includes obligatory and sunnah actions, hence the part “do as much of it as you can” is referring to sunnah actions as it is inexcusable to leave out obligatory actions and try use this hadith as evidence

(5) Some of the salaf used to say “Actions of piety are carried out by the pious and the sinner, but sins are only avoided by the truthful” i.e. The sinners may do good deeds, but it is difficult for them to leave out sins, hence only the righteous can abstain from sins

(6) Ibn Umar (May Allah be pleased with them both) used to say, “To return a daniq (a sixth of a dirham) of haram is better than 100,000 spent in the sake of Allah” i.e. It is better to avoid haram than do good

Quran was revealed gradually over a period of 23 years. This was the 3rd and final stage of revelation. According to the vast majority of scholars, the Qur'an was revealed in 3 stages:
Writing in (1) Al-Lauh al-Mahfoodh
(2) evelation to Lower heaven
(3) Revelation to our Prophet (SWT, Peace be upon him) by Jibreel over a period of 23 years

1. Writing in Al-Lauh al-Mahfoodh
Al-Qur'an was written in Al-Lauh al-Mahfoodh (The Preserved Tablet). Al-Lauh al-Mahfoodh is the tablet in which everything is written, everything that will happen from the beginning of creation to the end of time. Allah said in Quran -

85:21
{ بَلْ هُوَ قُرْءَانٌ مَّجِيدٌ (21) فِى لَوْحٍ مَّحْفُوظٍۭ (22) }
[(85:21) But this is an honored Qur'an (85:22) [Inscribed] in Al-Lauh al-Mahfoodh.]

The Prophet(SWS) said: "The first thing Allah created was the pen. He (Allah) said to it: 'Write'. It asked: 'What should I write, my Lord?' He said: 'Write what was decreed about everything till the Last Hour comes.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4700, Book 42, Hadith 105, Authenticated by Al-Albani)
This writing happened in The Preserved Tablet and thus Qur'an is first written in The Preserved Tablet.

2. Revelation to Lower heaven
Allah then revealed the Qur'an to Al-bayt al-izza (House of Honor), a place in lower heaven. This has happened in Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Decree) in the month of Ramadaan, as per the Quranic verse 2:185

2:185
{ شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أُنزِلَ فِيهِ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ هُدًى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَٰتٍ مِّنَ ٱلْهُدَىٰ وَٱلْفُرْقَانِ }
[(2:185) The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. ]

3. Revelation to our Prophet (SWS) by Jibreel over a period of 23 years
This revelation happened over a period of 23 years in the lifetime of the Prophet (SWS). This stage is unique as compared with other revelations such as Injeel, Taurah, Zaboor. These earlier books were revealed to the respective prophets all at once.

26:191
{ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ (192) نَزَلَ بِهِ ٱلرُّوحُ ٱلْأَمِينُ (193) عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنذِرِينَ (194) }
[(26:192) And indeed, the Qur'an is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds. (26:193) The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down (26:194) Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] - that you may be of the warners. ]

But for Qur'an, the revelation to our Prophet (SWS) took place gradually as and when Allah decided with His infinite wisdom. Whenever Allah wanted to reveal some verses He would command Jibril to bring the verses to Prophet Muhammad (SWS). From the authentic narrations we find that Jibril would hear the portions of the Quran from Allah and then he will come to our Prophet (SWS) with that portion of Quran.

 *The Era of the Prophet Muhammad*
According to the Muslim understanding, the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet (SAW) Muhammad over 23 years, from the age of 40 to his death at the age of 63. Over those 23 years, he received the revelation from God in a number of ways. Most commonly, it was spoken to him directly by the Angel Gabriel, but at other times it came during his dreams, and on a number of occasions, it even came to him directly from God, and he experienced this as the sound of a heavy bell, after which the words of the revelation were made clear to him.

Throughout those 23 years, the Prophet (SAW) endeavoured to share the revelation with those around him as soon as it came. He did this verbally, as he couldn’t read or write, but he strongly encouraged others around him to write down the revelation, as well as memorise it. This was the basis of how Muslims believe the Qur’an became preserved, not purely through written or oral means, but with both strengthening the other. The companions around him constantly strove to memorise the verses, with many eventually memorising the entire book, and simultaneously wrote these verses on parchment, bone, wood, stone, basically whatever they had around them. Over time at least 65 companions functioned as scribes for the Prophet (SAW) who eventually established a school in Madinah dedicated to teaching 900 of his companions to read and write.

However, the dialect of the Quraishi tribe that the Prophet (SAW) spoke in was not the only dialect of the Arabian peninsula, and as the religion was adopted by a growing number of tribes, they began to struggle with understanding the Qur’an. To overcome this, the Prophet (SAW) was given permission to teach the Qur’an in 7 of the main dialects in the region, allowing the message to be understood more widely. These dialects didn’t affect the written records, as they were only different when the Qur’an was actually vocalised.

This was the state of the Qur’an at the death of the Prophet (SAW)  Hundreds of companions who had memorised the complete Qur’an in 7 official dialects, all of which were considered valid ways of reciting the Qur’an, as well as an incredible amount of written records that were held by the Prophet's (SAW) companions throughout Madinah and beyond. The placing of each verse within each chapter had been established by the Prophet (SAW) but because each chapter functions as an independent unit, the companions had different ways of ordering the chapters themselves within the book as a whole.

Al-Nawawi, Hadith 9: Avoid what is forbidden; Do what is commanded; Don't ask too many questions.
